It’s official … the City Centre Motel has been declared unsafe and council has unanimously adopted a remedial action resolution to see the building demolished.

City councillor and chair of development services committee Kirk Duff said the issue of this downtown property has been a long-standing one for the city.

“The whole building is full of mold and bacteria; main building supports are missing; there are gaping holes in the floor,” he said. “I do believe it’s been upwards of nine years that we’ve been dealing with that building for a variety of reasons – break-ins, squatters, etc.

“It’s an absolute disgrace.”

Property owner Susan McLaren did not attend the meeting, but will have 14 days to request in writing that council reconsider its resolution. Failing that, the remedial work (demolition and removal of debris, backfilling, etc.) will have to take place within 60 days, or the city will undertake said efforts at the owner’s expense.

The Source was unable to reach the property owner for comment.
