A Single Man, starring the delicious Colin Firth, is the Kootenay Gallery’s last film in the current series of Monday Night at the Movies , to be shown at the Kootenay Centre Cinemas on April 26 at 7 p.m.

Hailed as the best movie of 2009, A Single Man is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood and marks a terrific debut by fashion designer turned director, Tom Ford. Colin Firth won the BAFTA Best Actor award and was nominated for an Oscar for the role.

Firth plays George Falconer, a British college professor in Los Angeles, who is finding it difficult to cope with life after the death of his partner Jim, eight months earlier. Jim’s family has been excluding George from the family’s mourning and he decides to end his desolate life. During his day of fastidious preparations for suicide, he reminisces about his life with Jim and meets up with various people who affect his thoughts about what he’s intending to do. One of these is his his friend Charlie, (Julianna Moore) a woman in love with him despite his sexual orientation ; another is Kenny, (Nicholas Hoult) a student who is coming to terms with his own nature and sees in George a kindred spirit.

Winning awards from film festivals in Venice, Toronto, London and Tokyo, this romantic tale of love interrupted, which emphasizes the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life, is not to be missed .

Tickets are $9 at the Kootenay Gallery , the Castlegar Library and at the door. For more information, contact the Gallery at 365- 3337 or visit its website at www.kootenaygallery.com.
