A local subcontractor will no longer be handling City of Castlegar contracts after an incident with a gas service line.
City director of Transportation and Civic Works Chris Barlow said the city has hired contractor Corix Utility to handle the installation of residential water meters. Corix, in turn, hired a subcontractor to carry out the installations.
“(When installing a residential meter), the subcontractor severed a gas service pipe (not a gas main),” said Barlow. “Instead of calling for assistance, they did a field repair, and back-filled the site without contacting Terasen Gas.”
The homeowners, who were aware of the incident, contacted Terasen themselves.
“Terasen re-excavated the dig site and found the field repair, which they deemed insufficient,” Barlow said. “They did a proper repair on the service pipe.
“Terasen and WCB (Workers Compensation Board) are both conducting investigations into the incident,” he added. The name of the subcontractor will not be released until the investigations are complete.
“Obviously, the subcontractor will no longer be working on the city contract,” Barlow said.
