An 81-year-old local man has succumbed to injuries he sustained during a car crash Monday that sent seven people to hospital.

The man was a passenger in the first vehicle, which strayed across the centre line and hit an oncoming truck head on. The driver and other passenger of that first car remain in hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the truck, and the driver and two passengers of a car that wasn’t able to stop in time and thus hit the truck from behind, have all been treated and released from hospital.

Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew said local RCMP, West Kootenay Traffic Services and the B.C. Coroner’s Office are investigating. Mathew indicated the police have not yet spoken to the driver of the first vehicle, an older lady currently in the hospital in serious condition, but officials do not believe speed and/or alcohol to be factors in the collision.

Police will not be releasing the deceased’s name until next of kin have been notified.
