Nelson police have identified a person of interest in the case involving an apparent sexual predator trying to lure women over the past two months.

Nelson Sgt. Howie Grant said, however, that women should still be very vigilant.

“(Be) observant, walk/jog in pairs, and carry a cell phone,” he cautioned. “Call 9-1-1 immediately if approached by this individual (and give) your location, a suspect description and (the suspect’s) licence plate number.”

Police have received 12 complaints over the past five weeks of a man driving up to women and asking for, and sometimes outright demanding, sex.

He is described as a caucasian male in his mid-20s, with dark hair (no facial hair), a very pale complexion, and a lisp. He’s driving a newer-style, teal minivan.

“After the information was first released to the public, the suspicious activity stopped, but several more women (then) came forward with similar allegations,” Grant said, adding it’s possible he’s going to neighbouring communities due to recent media attention. “It’s possible, but we think he’s still (in Nelson).”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police immediately.
