Community Services Society to offer more and better after donation drive
Four programs or services of Castlegar & District Community Services Society (CDCSS) will benefit from the $7600 raised in response to a November appeal for donations.
“Thanks to the community’s generosity, we will be able to move forward with new projects, or upgrades to existing ones,” said CDCSS Board Chair Roberta Hamilton. Hamilton announced that the following services will benefit:
- Parenting groups, which will offer workshops and support groups to address parents’ needs, including a specialized series on hard to handle adolescent boys, and the impacts of separation, divorce and blended families.
- Therapeutic supports for men, which will use public education and community development to break down social barriers that inhibit men from accessing services, and provide men with access to subsidized professional counselling.
- Seniors’ Guide reprint: the original guide to seniors’ services in the Castlegar area was distributed in 2008, and it is time to update it, print more copies, and get it out into the community again.
- Learning resources for kids and families, which will help families own the resources (books or DVDs) that can provide help when they most need it. This will be especially beneficial when there may be a long wait for face-to-face help.
To raise the money, volunteers stuffed 5000 letters into envelopes in one day, and copies were mailed to every household in the Castlegar and Robson postal code areas. “I want to thank our donors and our volunteers,” said Hamilton. “I would also encourage donors and others in the community to join the Society.” Hamilton noted that, besides being able to vote, become directors or volunteer for committees, members have the satisfaction of supporting an important community organization. Membership numbers also help show the strength of the Society in the community and outside it, important in grant applications. CDCSS accepts donations and memberships ($5 per calendar year) at any time. Drop in to the office at 1007-2nd Street, call 250-365-2104, or email cdcss@telus.net for information.
