Police will be releasing the name of a 19-year-old Castlegar man facing charges of child porn possession and breach of probation, after having been convicted of the same pornography charge in 2010. (See https://castlegarsource.com/news/crime/castlegar-teenager-facing-new-child-porn-charges-10984)

Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew said she’ll release the name after the young man’s court appearance in Nelson next week, despite not having released his name after the 2010 conviction.

“We have a different mind set this time around,” she said, explaining the man’s name was withheld to avoid him being tried and convicted in the court of public opinion, while he was showing remorse and willingly pursuing rehabillitation interventions like counselling.

These most recent charges, however, were not merely a violation of probation, she said, but also represent a dramatic escalation in the teen’s criminal nbehaviours, making public safety just one of many reasons it now makes sense to release his name to the public.

The man is being held in police custody pending his court appearance on April 27.
