Seven Okanagan College faculty writers to read in Nelson

@Oxygen Art Centre, Thursday, Sept. 1, 7:30 p.m.

A tasty literary smorgasbord will be offered when seven Okanagan writers–all faculty members of the Okanagan College English Department–read from their published fiction, nonfiction and poetry on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m. at Nelson’s Oxygen Art Centre, 320 Vernon St. (alley entrance).

The reading is free and open to the public.

Reading will be novelists Frances Greenslade (Shelter, Knopf, 2011) and Corinna Chong (Belinda’s Rings, NeWest Press, forthcoming), along with nonfiction writer Melanie Murray (For Your Tomorrow: The Way of an Unlikely Soldier, Random House, 2011).

Also performing samples of their work will be poets Jason Dewinetz (Clench, Gaspereau Press, 2010), Sean Johnston (The Ditch Was Lit Like This, Thistledown, 2011), Jake Kennedy (Apollinaire’s Speech to the War Medic, BookThug, 2011), and Kevin McPherson (Rhapsodomancy, Coach House, 2010).

Johnston is also editor of Okanagan College’s literary magazine, Ryga, while Chong is the magazine’s designer and visual editor.

The writers will be in Nelson taking part in Okanagan College English Department’s annual retreat. Okanagan College currently offers a two-year diploma program in writing and publishing.

Students receive applied training in print and web-based publishing, accounting, marketing and management, as well as in creative, cultural and professional communications.
