Tonight, at 6 p.m., will see Castlegar’s 12th annual Take Back the Night march, an event designed to raise awareness around violence against women.

Attendees will gather in the Canadian Tire parking lot and march along Columbia Avenue to the Safeway parking lot, where there will be speeches, music, an Aboriginal drum circle and refreshments.  Organizer Leanna Kozak, RCMP Victim Services Program coordinator, said the event usually wraps up at around 7 p.m.  “I think it’s always important to create awareness that violence against women is still going on,” she said. “It’s also a time to honour survivors of domestic violence and acknowledge those who have died.”  She said another compelling facet of the event is publicizing the resources available to people who are now, or who know someone who is now, suffering as a result of violence.  The Brownies and Girl Guides will be providing hot chocolate and cookies, while the Robson Choir entertains the crowd.
