Two raids within less than 24-hours have netted the Castlegar Crime Reduction Unit 539 pot plants, three arrests … and two kittens.

Police say the first raid, at roughly 12 p.m. on Nov. 17, took place at a rural residence just outside of Castlegar.

“A sophisticated indoor marihuana growing operation containing 61 marihuana plants was located in a barn on the property and also in a specially designed underground bunker below the garage beside the residence,” said RCMP Cpl. Darryl Orr.

“A 58-year-old male was arrested at the scene without incident and will be appearing in Castlegar Court in January of 2012. Charges of Production of a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking are being recommended against this male.   “

The second raid, at 9 a.m. Nov 18, was of a residence on Columbia Avenue near Andrew Sheret.

“An indoor marihuana growing operation was located in the basement of this residence containing 478 marihuana plants,” Orr said. “Two kittens were found to be inside the growing operation among the marihuana plants and were drinking the water which was used to fertilize the plants. The kittens were turned over to the SPCA by attending members to ensure their safety. A 31-year-old male and 47-year-old female were arrested on scene without incident.

“Charges of Production of a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking are being recommended. The male was held in custody and will be appearing in Nelson court on Nov. 21. The female was released from custody and will be appearing in court in December of 2011.”

Orr concluded by saying the Castlegar and Trail Crime Reduction Units continue to aggressively pursue any illegal drug activity within the City of Castlegar and Trail to ensure the safety of the communities. Anyone with any information regarding marihuana growing operations is urged to contact the R.C.M.P. or Crime Stoppers
