RCMP Chief Superintendent Mike Sekela announced during press conference Wednesday afternoon in Chilliwack that a top cop has been charged after allegedly taking — and using — cocaine from a police exhibit.

Staff-Sgt. Stuart Seib, the commander of the Merritt RCMP detachment and an 18-year veteran of the force, was charged Wednesday.

Sekela, RCMP southeast district officer chief superintendent, said the force learned of the alleged theft on Friday, Jan. 6.

Six senior officers are investigating the incident.

Seleka said Seib has been suspended and his privileges and access to RCMP facilities have been revoked.

RCMP brass will recommend Seib be suspended without pay.
