A 34-year-old Castlegar man is facing charges of aggravated assault and assault with a weapon after an incident last Tuesday night that saw a 45-year-old Castlegar man sent to hospital.

According to Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew, the victim attended a residence in the city’s south end in an attempt, police believe, to collect rent.

It was just after midnight on Feb. 21, according to statements, that the resident beat the victim with a hammer.

” A 45-year-old man had been beaten numerous times with a hammer and suffered injuries about his head and hands/arms,” Mathew said, adding the older man was taken to hospital, treated and released.

The accused was released on conditions (such as not possessing a weapon and avoiding contact with the victim) until his next court appearance March 14.

Mathew said the assault was targeted, as the two men knew each other before the incident.
