Nelson RCMP report a backcountry skier was survived a brush with an avalanche Thursday afternoon near the Whitewater Ski Resort.

Around 12:30 p.m., police received a report of an avalanche in the Evening Ridge area near the ski hill.

A small avalanche was confirmed to have occurred, but the middle-aged male believed to be from Slocan managed to ski through to safety.

Nelson Search and Rescue and the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment RCMP Search Dog were initially activated but canceled when it was confirmed that their services were not required.

There were no other individuals involved and the minor avalanche did not impact the roadway to the ski hill.

Police remind anyone accessing the backcountry to always check the current local avalanche conditions before traveling into the backcountry and to let family or friends know of your plans, including estimated time of return.

Whitewater Ski Hill is located approximately 15 kilometers south of Nelson on Highway 6.

The resort has received more than 150 centimeters of snow in the last 14 days, including 67 last weekend.
