Students battle it out at Selkirk College Annual Business competition
Selkirk College Business Administration students will get a first-hand experience in a high pressure business environment, when they square off on March 15th in Selkirk College’s seventh annual Business Competition.
The public is invited to come and watch as students compete to see which group of first year students has the savviest marketing campaign and which second year students develop the best business case strategy.
Each of the 20 teams (14 first year and 6 second year) has to present their cases to a panel of judges made up of local business leaders, within a time limit.
Program Advisor for Business Administration, Tiffany Snauwaert says that the annual business competition is invaluable for helping Selkirk business students get real-world experience.
“This is a multi-functional, active learning tool that simulates real-life business situations,” says Snauwaert.
“The competition gives students some business experience in a controlled environment. They get a chance to voice their ideas and solutions, learn interpersonal skills through working in teams, and practice presentation skills. They ultimately gain a lot of confidence.”
The theme for the first year students’ competition is marketing our very own Selkirk Saints hockey team and the work they do may be put into use by the team in the future.
The second year students’ competition will focus on putting on a bridal show.
Winners of the competition will take home cash and door prizes from various sponsors, as well as tuition vouchers from Selkirk College.
Selkirk College offers two-year diploma programs in accounting/finance, professional management and office management.
