Castlegar cop assaulted
A 24-year-old Castlegar man is facing charges of Assault Causing Bodily Harm on a Police Officer after an incident in the Castlegar RCMP detachment yesterday, March 15, at approximately 11 a.m.
According to RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew, the male, who was in police custody due to an assault incident from the night before, had been out of his cell to have a visit with a family member.
“As he was escorted back to his cell, and as the officer was closing the cell door, the male turned and punched the officer squarely in the face knocking him down,” she said. “The attack was unexpected and unprovoked.
“The officer sustained a fractured orbital bone and a badly swollen eye and nose. He was taken to hospital for treatment and released, however will be returning to hospital for further assessment and may require surgery. ”
The male was remanded in custody and will have his first appearance in court on March 20.
