Two women were arrested Wednesday when malodorous marijuana led police straight to a stash of pot.

Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Laurel Mathew said it was about 9 a.m. when two RCMP officers went to Tim Horton’s for coffee.

“While walking through the parking lot, the officers could smell marijuana,” she said. “There was no one in the area smoking anything – the smell was coming from one of the vehicles in the parking lot.”

She said the officers quickly zeroed in on the suspect vehicle and subsequently arrested one female in the vehicle and another female when she came back to the vehicle.

“A search of the vehicle led to the seizure of approximately 45 grams of marijuana, including 20 rolled marijuana joints, she said. “The marihuana was not openly being smoked, it was in packages amongst personal items. The officers were surprised at the potency of the smell when they found the marijuana packaged in sealed containers inside a car with the windows up and the doors closed.”

Mathew said one of the women was released without charges at the scene, and the other has been released pending a May 23 Castlegar court appearance.

“The RCMP are recommending charges of possession of a controlled substance,” Mathew said.
