Quick thinking by local citizens stops woman from jumping off Big Orange Bridge

Police are commending quick action taken by local citizens for saving a woman possibly from jumping to her death during an incident Monday (October 22) on Nelson’s Big Orange Bridge.

At approximately 10:30 p.m., a motorist called 911 reporting a women suspiciously walking onto the bridge dressed in only a housecoat.

With officers en route to the bridge, a person stopped to pull the female, who was now on the outer deck clinging to the bridge railing, to safety.

The women was taken to Kootenay Lake Hospital to be assessed under the mental health act.

Police believe without the assistance of the people who reported, and other that stayed to help NPD members, this event could have had a tragic ending.

Two men arrested for causing disturbances

Thursday (October 25) Nelson Police were twice called to the Chahko Mika Mall to deal with intoxicated men causing a disturbance.

The first incident happened at 2:30 p.m. when a 34-year-old man was shouting and swearing at shoppers outside Save On Foods grocery store.

The intoxicated man was taken into custody, charged with causing a disturbance and held until sober.

Later in the evening, 6:45 p.m., a 23-year-old male, possibly under the influence of street drugs, was causing a disturbance in the Mall food court.

Police once again took the man into custody, charged him with causing a disturbance and held the man until sober.

Sheriff narrowly misses hitting intoxicated man

Wednesday (October 24) a local sheriff narrowly missed hitting an intoxicated man who had staggered in front of the vehicle on Government Road in the late afternoon.

After avoiding the man, the sheriff stayed with the person until officers from Nelson Police arrived.

The man, known to police, was due to appear in court in the near future for charges stemming from liquor abuse.

He was held until appearing in Nelson Law courts Friday (October 26).
