Teen dances no longer allowed at Element

It’s looking like the teen dances at the Element night club that caused such controversy will now be a thing of the past.

Element owner Florio Vassilakakis said the government licensing has banned the events.

“They’ve banned youth events that are like a normal evening in the club (without the alcohol),” he said. “I could, perhaps, still do events like an all-ages concert or a family dining night.”

He said the teen dances are now a no-go, but he can still apply to do things like fundraisers for youth groups and that sort of thing.

“Of course I’m disappointed,” he said. “I think the decision to change the law didn’t have anything to do with our teen dances – in fact, one of the reasons it was allowed for so long was the successful way we ran them.

“I think it was more about other establishments across the province who didn’t put the kind of precautions in place that we did,” he added.
