Two young lads save dog in distress

City Police staff praised the quick thinking of two Nelson youths for possibly saving the life of a dog Saturday (February 23) near the Observatory Street Overpass in Rosemont.

In the early hours of Saturday evening the 12-and 13-year old boys located a dog that appeared to be wandering in traffic on the Observatory Street overpass.

The dog was limping at the time.

The boys were able to take control of the dog before walking the animal almost six blocks to the NPD offices on Stanley Street.

Nelson Police were able to make contact with the very relieved owner who advised the dog had escaped from the yard. 

The dog was not injured during the night on the town but was limping due to arthritis.

Speeding lands driver with impaired charge

Saturday (February 23) at approximately 3:40 a.m., a vehicle travelling at a very high rate of speed in the 100-block of Highway 6. 

After conducting an investigation, the driver was deemed to be impaired by alcohol and was served a 90-day Immediate Road Side Driving Prohibition, a four month Notice of Driving Prohibition, from the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles and a violation ticket.

The registered owner of the vehicle, who was in the passenger seat, was arrested for being intoxicated which was a breach of his release conditions regarding a separate police matter.  

The vehicle was impounded.

Tip jar stolen from Baker Street Coffee Shop

Monday (February 25), the Nelson Police Department received a report of a theft of a tip jar from a coffee shop, located in the 500-block of Baker Street.

The theft occurred Sunday when the shop was busy and although there is a person of interest identified by officers, Nelson Police would like to remind the public to protect property to the best of their abilities and consider keeping tip jars on the inside area of countertops.

It is estimated that there was approximately $10 in the jar at the time of the theft.
