NFD responds to second fire in as many days, Friday's blaze at Home Brewery building

The Nelson Fire Department responded to the second fire in as many days, this an exterior blaze Friday at the Home Brewery building on Railway Street across from Nelson Ford.
Dispatchers received a call at 11:30 a.m. to a report the exterior of the building was on fire.
Chief Simon Grypma, along with two on-duty firefighters responded to the call.
Two additional firefighters arrived from home.
When crews arrived on the scene it appeared initially the fire was brought under control by actions of the tenant.
However evaluation of the building with the Thermal Imaging Camera indicated that fire extension to the attic space was underway.
Crews quickly hit the roofline with foam and water. Crews then gained access to the attic space and confirmed that the fire extension had been suppressed
The fire appears to have originated in the cedar trees decorating the exterior of the building.
Cause of the fire is still under investigation.
In all, six firefighters responded to the incident with one fire engine, one ladder truck, and one command vehicle.
Nelson Police Department and RCMP were also involved in the fire, diverting traffic from Railway Street by for closing down streets.
Nelson Fire Rescue would like to remind the public of the fire hazard that ornamental conifer trees present to structures.

Fairview residents escape injury following kitchen fire
Nelson Fire Department said a Fairview residence escaped major damage following a kitchen fire Thursday afternoon.
Nelson Fire Department received a call at 12:48 p.m. of a kitchen fire in the Fairview district of the Heritage City.
When on duty members arrived they saw no visible fire and the occupants were out on the street.
The first arriving crew’s primary objective aside from ensuring the occupants were out was to minimize damage to the property.
Crews encountered a small fire that was able to be contained to the oven.
In all, two firefighters responded to the incident with one engine.
Damage was limited to the oven and smoke was removed from entire structure via Positive Pressure Ventilation.
Nelson Fire Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind the public to ensure smoke detectors are in proper working order.
