Charges have been laid against a 31-year-old Grand Forks man who allegedly started a fire at Grand Forks city hall, Thursday.

Andre Robert Conn has been charged with breaking and entering, arson, possession of incendiary materials and possession of break in instruments.

Conn is a 31-year-old Grand Forks resident and has been remanded in custody until he appears in Nelson court on Sept. 24.

The fire was started around 5:30 a.m., Sept. 19 at Grand Forks’ city hall. Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but not before extensive damaged was caused to the main floor of the building.

There was also some water damage in the lower level where the city’s archives are kept and smoke damage to the top floor.

A full structural inspection will be done to determine the future of the heritage building, which was built in 1913.
