Selkirk offers one-day course to help you deal with media

If interviewed by the media, would you be prepared to be spokesperson for your community group, charitable organization, interest group or business? If you’d like to brush up on your speaking and presentation skills, an upcoming Selkirk College media skills course will help improve your ability to get your message across.

To be better prepared for your “15 minutes of fame” as a media spokesperson or public speaker, register for the Selkirk College course You’re On The Air: Media Relations Skills to be offered in Nelson on Oct. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

This participatory one-day workshop will be led by local communication consultant Lorna Visser of Carmanah Strategies. Visser is a former daily newspaper reporter who holds a degree in journalism. 

Learn how to communicate your messages with ease and flair, how to unpack and diffuse threatening or negative questions, and how to ensure you get your messages out during an interview.

“By getting in front of the camera to practice being interviewed, you will come away better prepared to meet the press whether it be print, radio, television or new media,” says Visser. “You will have fun and learn useful communication skills in this supportive and experiential workshop.” 

This is the course for you if you anticipate being interviewed or if you just want to improve your ability to think on your feet and communicate more persuasively in meetings or public speaking situations.
