Border Bruins finish last home game with a win against Rebels

Friday Feb. 21st was the last home ice game the Bruins were to play this hockey season. It was a game against the Castlegar Rebels and the Bruins won the game 5 to 3.
Period one started of promptly with a penalty against Rebels’ Derek Georgopoulos receiving two minutes in the box for hooking.
The first two goals were score by the Bruins starting with Michael Rand with assists from teammates Max Newton and Nathan Cory. The second came from Bruins’ Jackson Purvis with assists from Connor Gross and Cory.
Following the goals were two more penalties against the Bruins both for two minutes for high sticking.
Period one finished with a goal by the Rebels, scored by Aaron Petten with only four seconds left on the clock, assists came from Ed Lindsey and Kody Disher.
When the ice shavings settled, the Rebels owned the second period by scoring the only two goals in that period. Their first goal was scored by Petten with assists from Disher and Ren Mason. The second came from Mike Bhatoa with assists from Connor Beauchemin and Tyler Bryant.
There were five penalties in period two, one for the Rebels and four for the Bruins. All were two minutes long of the iced except for a ten minute penalty given to Bruins Jackson Purvis for misconduct.
Period three was more relaxed amongst the players on the ice and did not have any calls from the refs and no penalties were given to either team.
Period three’s third goal came from Rebels’ Petten with assists from Disher and Lindsey with 15:02 left on the clock.
The Bruins scored their third and final goal for this game at 11:09 left on the clock. Mitchell Pearson made the goal with assists Brandon Savaia and Lukas Peters.
Goal number five for the Rebels came when the clock read 7:34. It was scored by Georgopoulos with help from Aaron Brewer.
The remainder of period three was played out with many failed (but close) attempts at getting another goal by players from the Bruins.
The fans in the bleachers were on the edges of their benches in the anticipation for the Bruins to connect the puck with the net but the last seven minutes of period three played out with no such luck for the Bruins their last home game of the 2014 hockey season.
Coach Kevin Flather said that the team had a lot against them this season with a lot of injuries happening on the ice. They were also in the toughest division in the league, but they “fought hard,” he said. At least 10 of this year’s players will be leaving the team this season so there will be a lot of fresh faces on the Bruins team next year.
