They say a picture is worth 1,000 words – and it could also be worth $100 in swag now that Castlegar has a fun new promotion on the go.

City council, at its regular meeting Monday night, voted unanimously to set aside $500 for the #CastlegarSelfie Summer promotion, according to city councillor Kevin Chernoff.

“The idea is simple enough,” Chernoff said, sheepishly admitting he cribbed the idea from Sylvan Lake, where his daughter, Megan Chernoff, serves as city councillor. “We know a lot of great things happen in the community, so just take a selfie photograph while you’re having fun out and about Castlegar, then post it on Facebook or Twitter and tag it #CastlegarSelfie , and be entered to win $100 in Castlegar swag.”

He said this is the kind of promotion residents and visitors really get behind – largely because it’s easy and fun.

“And it’s a way of sharing your favourite community experiences with each other and basically with the whole rest of the world.”

Chernoff said another upside to the selfie promotion is its expandability: it can be applied to winter in Castlegar, or fishing in and around Castlegar, or really any activity, event or season locals wish to promote.

The take #CastlegarSelfie Summer will encourage tourists and residents to take a selfie photo with their favourite Castlegar memories and tweet or tag the photo on Twitter and FaceBook, allowing participants to capture and share the summer highlights and outstanding sites Castlegar has to offer. Each participant will be entered into a random draw for a Castlegar prize pack to be drawn September 15, 2014.

This initiative will promote our Community’s hospitality, culture, summer events, parks and recreational activities. Twitter and FaceBook are proven successful marketing tools with the ability to reach a large audience quickly.”
