Free Trail event features expert on putting children and families first

“Putting children and families first” is a one time event that will be free to the public in Trail on June 10 and 11. Participating in the event will be Joanne Schroeder, who is a child development expert from the University of British Columbia.
“People who are passionate about children and families will want to attend this event to learn what young children need to get the best start in life and what communities can do to make a positive difference,” said Ruth Beck, manager of the Trail area health and environment program.
The event will be held in the Best Western Plus Columbia River Hotel in the Waneta Room. On June 10, there will be a public forum and ideas session, held from 7 – 9 p.m. On June 11, there will be an action planning session from 9 – 11 a.m.
The event will focus on learning new information about child developmental health, discovering new ideas about family support, and bringing your own questions and ideas to be discussed.
“Joanne Schroeder will present the latest research on children’s development and how young children in the lower Columbia region are doing compared with provincial and national trends,” said Beck.
“There will be time for questions and to share your ideas about what more we could do locally to help children and families thrive.”
Schroeder is the deputy director of the human early learning partnership at UBC. She will be the professional leading the public forum, ideas session and action planning session.
“Previously, Joanne was provincial adviser to Children First, a project that worked in 45 B.C. communities to build local capacity towards children’s healthy development and thriving families,” said Beck.

“The event is sponsored by the Family Action Network, the Early Years Office, Teck Trail Operations and the Trail area health and environment program,” said Beck.
