RCMP said one person was taken to hospital with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries following a single vehicle accident Sunday morning on Highway 3A west of Nelson near the Grohman Narrows Provincial Park.

Witnesses at the accident scene that happened around 10:45 a.m. Sunday, said the four-door sedan was driving on snow-covered highway when it began to slide sideways before rolling down the rock-covered bank until resting near the Grohman Narrows pond.

One of the occupants in the vehicle was able to get out from the vehicle that ended up on its roof.

The vehicle following accident car called 9-1-1 before helping with the rescue.

RCMP, along with assistance from Nelson Police and the Nelson Fire Department and BC Ambulance attended the scene.

The injured occupant was taken from the accident scene on a stretcher by rescue personal to an awaiting ambulance parked on the back road leading to the Nelson Sewage Treatment Plant.

The highway was reduced to single lane, alternating traffic coordinated by NPD and RCMP officers.

RCMP continues to investigate the accident but believe slippery roads caused from the first major snowstorm of the winter season to hit the West Kootenays is to be believed the cause of the accident.

This was the second accident involving a vehicle at Grohman Narrows Nelson Fire Department was called to respond.

Saturday afternoon at 2:42 p.m., NFD was called to a vehicle over the bank at Grohman Narrows.

Fortunately both occupants were able to exit the vehicle and make their way up the bank.

Fire crews inspected the accident site to ensure no fluids were leaking into the pond. There were no concerns and the crew stood by until the vehicle was pulled up to the highway.

During Sunday accident a small amount of fluids entered the pond.

Fire crews were able to utilize absorbent pads to remove the product from the pond.  After the vehicle was removed crews ensured that no additional fluids leaked out as it was hauled up the bank.

RCMP would like to remind the public driving on snow or ice covered roads to make sure the vehicle is equipped with proper tires — winter tires or chains are required by law on some highways in the Interior.
