LETTER: 'When they go low, we go high'

There’s been a flood of posts recently contrasting a naked or near-naked Melania Trump with Michelle Obama looking elegant. Alt-right criticism of Michelle, almost without exception, is abhorrent and racist. But is unfair criticism of one woman *in any way* addressed by inviting ridicule and mockery of another?
Michelle is extraordinary. She would be a hard act for anyone to follow, let alone a former nude model who’s almost certainly out of her depth. But shooting fish in a barrel is not fair sport.
How is slut-shaming suddenly okay? When we’re too smug to see that’s exactly what we’re doing? How does this not turn us into that which we despise?
This is where “When they go low, we go high” matters. This is how disappointment turns into self-righteous bullying. If we claim to be better than that, we need to be better than that.
