Regional District of Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Centre said in a media release late Tuesday, the evacuation order area for the Kaslo landslide has been reduced after a site inspection and consultation with geotechnical experts.

The RDCK EOC said that residents that have been removed from the evacuation order area should remain on evacuation alert and be vigilant and prepared to evacuate if necessary.

The properties that remain under evacuation order are:

  • 1450 Zwicky Road
  • 1447 Zwicky Road
  • 1443 Zwicky Road
  • 1325 Victoria Avenue
  • 502 Charles Street
  • 424 Charles Street

“During the site assessment of the landslide today it was observed that the volume of the slide is estimated to be 10,000 to 20,000 cubic metres, 100m long and 75m wide,” the RDCK press release said.

“The toe of the slide is approximately 300 metres above the nearest houses on Zwicky Road, and a small volume of muddy water is flowing down to the area above the houses.

“A small amount of slide movement was noted by geotechnical experts today and other signs of continuing instability were observed.

The RDCK said this slide is part of a larger dormant ancient landslide feature and occurred following a winter with an unusually high valley bottom snowpack.

“This snowpack has melted over the past weeks and the area has received a large amount of rainfall which contributed to the slide,” the release said.

The RDCK said it will keep the public updated as more information becomes available.

Residents can contact the Emergency Operations Centre Reception for more information at 1-866-522-7701 or 250-352-7701, as well as the Provincial Emergency Coordinator Centre at 1-800-663-3456.
