The Provincial Government’s announcement that tuition fees for Adult Basic Education will be eliminated starting immediately is welcome news for learners interested in upgrading opportunities in the Selkirk College region.

Looking to open the door to adults who wish to expand their education and skills, Premier John Horgan made the announcement at Victoria’s Camosun College. The NDP government’s plan also includes waiving tuition for domestic students in English Language Learning programs across the province.

“We’re committed to making it easier for British Columbians to get ahead,” Premier Horgan said. “By eliminating these fees, we’re tearing down the roadblocks to the basic education and skills people need to improve their lives. The action we’re taking today gives hope and help to people throughout the province and is a long-term investment in B.C.’s economy.”

Selkirk College offers academic upgrading at all its campuses and learning centres across the West Kootenay and Boundary regions. In a supportive classroom environment, students are able to complete high school level courses in math, English, biology, chemistry and physics, as well as college success, computer sciences and social studies.

“This is terrific news for folks in our area who want to further advance their education,” said Allison Alder, the chair of Selkirk College’s School of Academic Upgrading & Development. “Removing financial barriers to this program brings students one step closer to accessing high school level courses specifically made for adults. It brings them one step closer to realizing their dreams.”

More than half of the students who enrol in the Upgrading Program plan to next attend one of Selkirk College’s post-secondary programs. On average, 20 per cent of students registered in Selkirk College programs have previously taken at least one Adult Basic Education course from the college.

“Access to this program is a priority for Selkirk College,” said Alder. “We want to help students prepare for success whether they are completing their high school diploma, preparing for a college or university program, or improving knowledge and building confidence as a student. Selkirk College has done an exceptional job of meeting student and community needs in this area over the years, and free tuition for upgrading courses will only improve access.”

The Selkirk College Student’s Union has been advocating for free tuition for Adult Basic Education courses since fees were introduced in 2015.

Seats are still available for courses starting this September at all Selkirk College campuses and learning centres. Drop into the campus in your community for scheduled information and registration sessions being held throughout August. More information can be found at selkirk.ca/upgrading.
