Body of 10-year-old crash victim recovered from Arrow Lake

The search for a 10-year-old boy who was believed to have gone into the water with a vehicle near Halcyon Hot Springs on Dec. 27, has been concluded, according to RCMP Sgt. Monty Taylor.

“On Thursday morning, Dec. 28, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team arrived to assist Search and Rescue teams in locating the vehicle and the missing 10-year-old,” Taylor said in a press release. “Just after the underwater search commenced, the vehicle with the body of the 10-year-old boy was recovered.

The West Kootenay Traffic Services Unit, with assistance from Nakusp RCMP are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident. BC Coroners Service will determine cause of death; due to the privacy of the deceased, identity will not be released or confirmed at this time.

“This is a tragic end to a family’s holiday season, our thoughts and prayers are with the family and their extended network of family and friends,” Taylor said.

Police are still seeking witnesses to this incident. If you were in the area of Halcyon Hot Springs or travelling on Hwy 23 near Arrow Lake on Dec. 27, or have any information about the red Toyota Matrix travelling in this area, you are asked to contact the Nakusp RCMP at (250)265-3677.

On Dec. 27, at approximately 3 p.m. three Slocan area residents travelling in a red Toyota Matrix went off Hwy 23 and down an embankment into Arrow Lake, near the Halcyon Hot Springs.

The 37-year-old male driver and 11-year-old female passenger were able to get out of the vehicle prior to it becoming submerged but the third passenger, a 10-year-old male is missing. Nakusp RCMP and other emergency personnel arrived on scene and subsequently transported the male and 11-year-old female to hospital where they were treated for injuries and later released.

Search and Rescue commenced searching yesterday for the missing boy and vehicle. The search has resumed today with assistance from the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team.

West Kootenay Traffic Services, a Traffic Reconstructionist and the Nakusp RCMP are continuing to investigate the cause of the incident.
