This is a reminder that open burning is prohibited within the City of Castlegar. Consideration may be granted for “FireSmarting” difficult to access property, however a site visit and approval with a permit is required before burning commences.

As the warm weather makes it tempting to clean up the backyards, the City of Castlegar Open Burning Bylaw does not allow for the burning of yard waste, garbage, construction or demolition material. We have been busy today dealing with burning complaints involving yard clean-up waste. We ask that you please utilise the yard waste disposal facility at the Castlegar Recreation Complex.

The open burning bylaw does not apply to campfires on private property. Campfires are defined as:

  • No larger than 1m wide x 1m long x 1m high, and are contained;

  • Clean dry campfire wood is used only. No demolition, construction, garbage, yard, garden, grass, leaves or any prohibited material should be burned;

  • Campfires should be located on private property only and a minimum safe distance of 3 metres away from structures, fences, overhangs including trees as well as City easements or utility right of ways;

  • Campfires must be supervised by adults at all times and never left unattended;

  • Campfires must be fully extinguished and not left to burn out and a means of quickly extinguishing the campfire, such as a garden hose, must be present;

  • Please be considerate of neighbours with respect to smoke emitted from campfires.
