Sculpture vandalism prompts hilarity and upset

No, you didn’t read that headline wrong – police attended a call that was both funny and sad after vandals pushed a sculpture off a wall onto the sidewalk last Friday night.

“Well, Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall …,” said RCMP Acting Sgt. Brett Turner – referring to the sculpture in question.

The Humpty Dumpty sculpture was featured in the 2015 Sculpture Walk and was sponsored by Celgar and placed on a wall outside the library downtown two years ago.

There were no king’s horses or men to respond, but the Queen’s horsemen (the Mounties), have videotape of the vandalism and are investigating.

“Yes, he had a great fall,” said library director Kim Partanen. “It was heartbreaking to watch the video of him being damaged.”

On the upside, Sculpture Walk executive director Joy Barrett said they can, indeed, put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

“There was not much damage,” she said, adding he has been removed for repairs and will have to be re-installed.

It turns out, though, that Humpty needs more than just patching up.

“We are looking for someone to sponsor him or purchase him – and, ideally, to donate him to the library. They really, really want to keep him.”

Anyone interested in helping Humpty achieve a forever home can contact Barrett at 1-250-354-9169 or go to http://www.sculpturewalkcastlegar.com/support/
