Burning yard/garden waste in Castlegar a costly mistake
With fire season underway, the Castlegar Fire Department is reminding residents that burning yard and garden waste is an absolute no-no – and could cost you big bucks. The following is a Facebook post CFD published detailing just how expensive it can be to violate burning rules within city limits:
Please be aware, City of Castlegar Bylaws 905 and 1170 prohibits the burning of yard and garden waste within the city boundary. These items can be taken to the city provided recycling area next to the rec center free of charge.
Potential fines under Bylaw 1179, Municipal Ticket Schedule are but not limited to:
$500 for burning prohibited material
$500 for out of control/dangerous fire
$300 for nuisance fire
$300 for starting a fire without a permit
$300 for burning during a prohibited period
$300 burning without a competent adult in charge
$300 burning without adequate fire fighting equipment present
In addition to the above fines, a service fee may be applied should the fire department have to respond and extinguish a prohibited fire on private property. This is based on the 2018 provincial rates which currently are:
$595/hour for an Engine Company
$826/hour for a Aerial Company
$369/hour for a Water Tender
$63/hour for Incident Command
Should it be necessary to contact the Ministry of Environment, their fines may also be enforced.
Please refer to the links below and your cooperation is very much appreciated. Should anyone have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Castlegar Fire Department at 250-365-3266 Monday to Friday between the hours of 830 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
