Front line officers attended to a residential structure fire on Yew Street in Castlegar, which subsequently spread to a second home. Occupants of one of the houses were not home at the time, while occupants of the other were able to escape. Both homes were completely destroyed as a result of the blaze.

The criminal investigation determined the fire was a result of arson, states Sgt. Monty Taylor, Detachment Commander for the Castlegar RCMP. Police identified and arrested a suspect who is believed to be responsible for starting the fire.

On November 16, 2020 two criminal charges of arson were formally laid against Jonathan Mcallister, a 26-year-old Castlegar man. Mcallister has since been released from custody on strict bail conditions. He is expected to appear in Castlegar Provincial Court next on January 13, 2021.
