Castlegar City Hall lowers flags to half-mast, holds moment of silence
The City of Castlegar has lowered flags at City Hall and the Fire Hall to honour and mourn the 215 children whose remains were discovered at the site of a former Kamloops Residential School.
This follows the release of preliminary findings from a survey of the grounds by the Tk’emúps te Secwépemc First Nation.
City staff will also be recognizing a moment of silence at 2:15 p.m. today.
“Everyone at the City is deeply saddened by this news,” says Mayor, Kirk Duff. “Our flags will remain lowered for nine days, which is 215 hours, to show our sorrow for the children who lost their lives.”
The National Indian Residential School Crisis Line is available for former residential school students and others looking for support. It can be accessed by calling 1.866.925.4419.
In June, we encourage the community to celebrate National Indigenous History Month which focuses on the history, heritage and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples in Canada. National Indigenous History Month is a time for learning about, appreciating and acknowledging the contributions First Nations, Inuit and Métis people have made in shaping Canada.
