RDCK monitoring water levels throughout region
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is currently experiencing higher than normal water levels in many creeks, streams and rivers for this time of year. The RDCK Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is monitoring the situation and while there are currently no flood advisories or warnings in the RDCK, residents should still be aware and exercise extreme caution around creeks, streams and rivers. The current rain forecast could further increase water levels and has the potential to cause floods or landslides.
Environment Canada has issued public alerts for heavy rain in the area of Arrow Lakes, Slocan Lake and Kootenay Lake. Rainfall of 10-25mm is expected throughout the next 24 hours. This weather is a direct result of the atmospheric river that continues to wreak havoc across the Province, producing extended periods of heavy rain. Residents are asked to report floods, debris flows, or landslides they observe by contacting the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre at 1-800-663-3456.
“While our rivers have enough capacity this time of year to handle this amount of rainfall, our smaller systems (creeks and streams) will be more responsive, so we’re monitoring those closely,” said Chris Johnson, RDCK EOC Director. “With the forecast calling for continued rain over the next 12-24 hours, we’ll be in regular contact with our partners at Environment & Climate Change Canada and the BC River Forecast Centre and will communicate any increased risk through our normal channels.”
The RDCK encourages residents to remain prepared for unexpected events or emergencies by making a plan and having a household emergency kit and a grab and go bag. Information about Evacuation Orders and Alerts in the RDCK can be found on the RDCK website, Facebook and Twitter.
