Ground-breaking for new Habitat for Humanity Build Project in Castlegar
On Tuesday April 19, Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC will be breaking ground on a new multi-family, affordable housing project in Castlegar.
Four families will be given the opportunity to achieve the dream of affordable homeownership thanks to Habitat for Humanity’s newest build project in Southeast BC. Located at 560 8 Street in Castlegar.
Neil Coburn, Volunteer Chair for Habitat Southeast BC says he is incredibly proud of this project, “This build signifies a renewed effort towards of our capacity to deliver on the Habitat ideals and signals what we hope will be many more Habitat home projects throughout Southeast BC. There is a critical need for housing in our area and Habitat for Humanity Southeast BC is here to help.”
Construction of the multi-family build is expected to be completed by early 2023, when four new Habitat families will be handed keys to their very own home.
“Selected Habitat families are not given the home. They buy it,” says Coburn. “They must satisfy several criteria: have the ability to pay an income-appropriate monthly mortgage, be in need of decent, affordable housing, and be willing to partner with Habitat. As part of that partnership the family must volunteer a total of 500 hours toward helping with the build and/or volunteer within the community for other worthwhile organizations.
Habitat for Humanity believes that access to affordable housing is a basic human right, that should be available to all. Habitat Southeast BC is committed to helping families forge a path out of poverty and into safe and secure housing they can call their own.
