CASTLEGAR HOSPICE SOCIETY

Council received a presentation from the Castlegar Hospice Society and discussed the possibility of installing a wind phone at Millennium Park & Ponds. Wind phones are usually found in unconnected telephone booths where visitors can hold one-way conversations with deceased loved ones. Wind phones are gaining popularity since their introduction in Otsuchi, Japan.

SUPPORT FOR EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE – TÜRKIYE AND SYRIA

Council considered a potential donation in response to the recent earthquake in Türkiye and Syria and recognized the tragic nature of this event. Rather than donating on behalf of City of Castlegar taxpayers, Council decided to encourage residents to make individual donations if they would like to support the cause.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

Council considered a request to support an application to the Union of British Columbia Municipalities Community Emergency Preparedness Fund to fund Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) training for 24 City staff. The EOC training ensures City staff are trained to support the community in the event of an emergency. This training is part of the City’s training requirements under Emergency Measures Bylaw 828 and the Emergency Program Act. It also supports delivering on the lessons learned from the 2021 Merry Creek wildfire which threatened the City.

GARBAGE, RECYCLES & YARD WASTE COLLECTION & DISPOSAL SERVICES AGREEMENT EXTENSION

Council considered a report to extend the current Garbage, Recycles & Yard Waste Collection & Disposal Services Agreement with Waste Management of Canada Corporation. If adopted, the temporary extension would move the agreement to a month-to-month arrangement until a new Curbside Collection Services Agreement is implemented. This will be considered for final adoption at the March 20, 2023 Regular Council Meeting.
