Habitat for Humanity Southeast British Columbia is entering the final phases of its 4-family affordable home build project in Castlegar. Located at 560-8th Street, completion of the homes is expected sometime near the end of May with occupancy soon after.

“As the project nears its completion, our search for eligible partner families continues,” said Elaine Pura, Executive Director.

“These affordable homes are being built for families with moderate incomes who have had a difficult time saving to own a home of their own. Selected families are provided with zero-downpayment geared to income mortgage, which helps to make homeownership a reality. As part of their Habitat partnership, each family must complete 500 volunteer service hours in the community.”

Habitat for Humanity will be holding two information sessions on Tuesday, March 28 at the Sandman Inn in Castlegar. These sessions are open to the public and will speak directly to those interested in becoming a Habitat Partner Family and even help them to start the application process. The sessions will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and then again from 6 to

8 p.m. in the Columbia room at the Sandman Inn.

Pura said “We encourage anyone who may be interested in becoming a new homeowner and have thought it to be unattainable to come by and sit in on one of the sessions. I think many might be surprised that they could very well qualify as a Habitat Partner Family.”

The four-family, ultra energy efficient build project consists of two three-bedroom homes and two two- bedroom homes, one of which is designed as an accessible unit for people with mobility issues.

For those unable to attend the information sessions, you can find all the information at the Habitat for Humanity Website: https://southeastbc.habitat.ca/en/apply-for-housing/apply-for-home-ownership

The campaign to raise money to support our work continues.

“We are still looking for donations to help us finish the build. In particular, we are offering Team Build opportunities where Businesses, Community Clubs, and other organizations can make a donation and have a team on-site to actually contribute to the construction of the homes,” said Pura.
