Environment Canada issues Snowfall warning for Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass
Environment Canada has issued a Winter Storm warning Thursday for the West Kootenay/Boundary region.
Environment Canada said that hazardous winter conditions can be expected on Highway 3 — Paulson Summit to Kootenay Pass — with a risk of freezing rain near Paulson Summit.
“A warm front associated with a low pressure system is moving into the B.C. interior today,” Environment Canada said.
“Snow is forecast to fall over most of the highway. However, freezing rain is possible near Paulson Summit.”
“Light snow will begin this morning then intensify tonight.”
Environment Canada said snow will change to rain this afternoon as warm air erodes the cold airmass.
However, rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations.
“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” Environment Canada said.
Rapidly accumulating snow and local blowing snow making difficult travel conditions with visibility suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
Weather in the mountains can change suddenly resulting in hazardous driving conditions.
Winter tires or chains are required on many highways in B.C. from October 1 to March 31.
A winter tire must be in good condition, with a minimum tread depth of 3.5 mm (5/32 inches).
The website Shift Into Winter reminds drivers to know before you go.
Adjust to winter driving behaviour and use winter tires and chains.
Road conditions are available at DriveBC.
