UPDATED: Police arrest suspect in random assault of two teenagers

The suspect associated with a random assault of two two teenage females in Nelson last week was arrested by police Nelson Police said in a recent media release.
Nelson Police Department said, with the assistance of the RCMP, identified and arrested the suspect in relation to this file.
“Matthew Huber has been charged with one count of assault,” the NPD media release said.
“He was put before the courts (Tuesday, March 19, 2024) afternoon, and was subsequently released from custody on numerous conditions.”
Nelson Police said that due to a publication ban, no further information that can be released at this time.
The assault of two the two teenagers happened during the afternoon on Friday (March 15, 2024) at the intersection of Cedar and Front Streets.
The Nelson Police would like to thank the public for their numerous tips, which led to the arrest of this individual.

Nelson Police Department investigates random assault on teenage girls
Nelson Police is actively looking for a suspect involved in a senseless assault of two two teenage females near the intersection of Cedar and Front Streets Friday afternoon.
Nelson Police said in a media release Saturday that the disturbing incident involving the random and unprovoked assault happened at approximately 4:30 p.m. on March 15th , 2024.
“This was a senseless and reprehensible act of violence against two innocent individuals,” said Inspector Kris Rice.
“Our priority is to ensure the safety of our community, and we are fully committed to identifying and apprehending the suspect responsible for this assault.”
Reports indicate that the assault occurred when an adult male targeted the victims without any apparent motive.
The suspect is described as described as:
- Caucasian
- 40 years of age
- long dark hair
- dark facial hair
- wearing black
- dirty clothes
- possibly wearing a dark jacket
Nelson Police said witnesses intervened and bravely followed the suspect for some time before losing sight of him in the downtown core.
Nelson Police urges anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation with the cooperation of the community is vital in bringing this suspect to justice.
“We are grateful for the swift actions of the witnesses who intervened and followed the suspect,” added Inspector Rice.
“Their courage is commendable.”
