RCMP is advising the public of a speeding ticket text scam is making its way through the BC Interior and Vancouver Island, including Nanaimo.

RCMP said people have been a text message urging drivers to deal with a speeding ticket of face court action.

On Monday March 25, 2024, the Nanaimo RCMP switchboard received numerous calls from the public asking if this was scam or was it legitimate.

Nanaimo RCMP said the text is the same one that was received by dozens of individuals today throughout the Okanagan and prompted a news release to be issued on behalf of the Kelowna RCMP.

Police said the text says that the receiver was caught speeding in a school zone and in order to settle the ticket without having to attend court, they are directed to a website. Once at the website, the receiver is asked to provide a credit card number.

“It’s just another scam to get a hold of your money via your credit card. Just delete it but afterwards make sure you share the text message with friends and family so they don’t fall for it,” said R/Cst Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.
