Pontoon Recovery Work at the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam

This fall, we are planning to recover two pontoons from the floating guidewall at the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam that sunk to the bottom of the reservoir during an extreme weather event in 2020.  This work is necessary to restore the full functionality of the floating guidewall, which allows marine traffic to safely approach and access the navigation lock at the Hugh L. Keenleyside Dam from the Arrow Lakes Reservoir side of the facility.

Work to recover the pontoons is planned to begin on Monday, September 23, 2024, and we estimate that this work will be completed in early December 2024. Once the pontoons have been recovered, they will be temporarily stored in the headpond above the dam until the summer of 2025. The recovered pontoons will be marked with signage and navigation lights will be in place to ensure that they are visible in accordance with Transport Canada’s requirements.

The navigation lock will remain open for the majority of the time that this work is underway; however, several short-term closures will be required for the work to be completed safely. We ask that boaters exercise caution while approaching the navigation lock on the Arrow Lakes Reservoir side during this time as there will be divers in the water. Please note that navigation lock will be closed from September 16 to 27 as planned for the fall maintenance outage.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your support while this work is completed. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mary Anne Coules at 250-365-4565.
