Trail man charged in aggravated assault investigation

On March 27, 2023, shortly after 5 a.m., a 33-year-old woman was dropped off at the entrance to the Kootenay Boundary Hospital emergency department in Trail, BC, with an injury consistent with a gunshot wound.

Frontline officers attended the hospital, where the victim was determined to have sustained serious, life-threatening injuries.

The man who allegedly dropped the woman off, fled the scene before speaking with hospital staff or police. Later that morning, officers arrested a 36-year-old man in relation to the incident.

Investigational assistance was subsequently provided by the Southeast District’s General Investigation Unit.

Update: The BC Prosecution Service has approved charges against Brenden Rothweiler with the following offenses:

  • Aggravated assault – Criminal Code section 268(2)
  • Discharge a firearm with intent to wound/disfigure – Criminal Code section 244(1)
  • Storage of a firearm contrary to regulation – Criminal Code section 86(2)

Rothweiler has been released from custody with conditions and is awaiting his next court appearance on Dec. 3, 2024.

Both individuals involved were known to one another, and this remains an isolated incident.
