City of Castlegar 2025 Budget Process
The City of Castlegar has officially launched its 2025 budget process. This is a vital step in planning how public funds will be allocated to support essential services, infrastructure, and community programs and ensuring the City’s priorities align with community needs.
How the Budget Process WorksThe City’s annual budget process includes the following steps:
- Community Group Presentations
On November 27/28, community groups that contribute to the delivery of Council’s Strategic Priorities by supporting arts, culture, and heritage in our community presented their annual updates on service delivery and shared their proposals for consideration in the 2025 draft budget. - Public Input
Public input is key to ensuring the budget reflects the needs and values of Castlegar residents. Residents are encouraged to share their ideas by emailing budget@castlegar.ca by 4 p.m. on December 11. Council will review this input during its Regular Council Meeting at 7 p.m. on December 16. - Draft Financial Plan Development
Following the community group presentations and input from the public, the City’s Finance Team prepares a draft financial plan and presents it to the Council for deliberations.
The budget will be deliberated during two Special Council Meetings on January 20 and January 23 at 5 p.m. These meetings allow Council to refine priorities, ensure fiscal responsibility, and finalize the plan before it is formally adopted. The public is encouraged to attend these meetings in person or online via Zoom.
As part of this step, the City hosts an open house to give residents an opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the proposed budget, and share feedback. This is anticipated to be scheduled in early 2025.
- Financial Plan Bylaw Adoption
Once Council has completed its deliberations, a draft 2025-2029 Financial Plan Bylaw will be presented as the final step in formalizing the City’s 2025 budget.
The City is committed to an inclusive and transparent budget process. By attending meetings in person or online and sharing feedback, residents can help shape the City’s financial decisions that impact the community.
