Newsletter from MLA Morissette
The new school year is underway, and it’s a great time to highlight how we can keep kids safe inside and outside the classroom.
With more children on the road, remember to slow down in school zones, put your phone away, and keep an eye out for pedestrians crossing the street. When possible, walking to school is such a great way for children to start their day with physical activity.
Inside the classroom, we’re also making sure to build safe, caring, and inclusive school communities through our Expect Respect and a Safe Education (Erase) program. This program helps schools support mental wellness and provide anti-bullying resources. Erase also contains great resources for parents and families, such as training to support families and caregivers in navigating the digital world and tips for having difficult conversations around bullying. To learn more about Erase, please visit: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/erase
In addition, beginning this school year, CPR and AED training has been added to the Grade 10 Physical and Health Education curriculum, empowering students with the knowledge to respond confidently in emergencies and help save lives in their communities.
Whether it’s inside the classroom or on their way to school, children deserve to feel safe and supported – and we’re doing everything we canto make that happen.
Thank you to all the teachers, School board staff and Trustees, educational assistants, PAC members, parents, and crossing guards doing their part to make school a safe space for kids.
It was fun to host George Anderson MLA for Nanaimo – Lantzville and Parliamentary Secretary for Transit visit in our constituency this week. We had a fantastic time showing him around our beautiful region. We were also able to have him meet with some local advocates in Castlegar and Mayor Maria McFadden. His visit brought energy, inspiration, and meaningful connection. We hope to have him visit again, and to have more MLAs across B.C. visit. To all my fellow MLAs, come visit Kootenay – Monashee anytime — our doors are always open!
New Nelson health campus will support people of all ages
People in Nelson and nearby communities now have improved access to care with the opening of the Nelson community health campus. This new health campus is a powerful example of how investing in infrastructure strengthens communities. By bringing modern, culturally inclusive health-care facilities to Nelson, we’re not only improving access to care for people of all ages, we’re also creating good local jobs and supporting the long-term well-being of the region.
Minister’s statement after 2025 meeting of Canadian Council of Fisheries and Aquaculture Ministers
Last week, Minister Neill met with federal, provincial, and territorial counterparts to discuss advancing trade and competitiveness of Canadian fish and seafood products, supporting sustainable growth in fisheries and aquaculture, preventing illegal fishing activities and preventing the spread of alien invasive species. The fisheries and seafood sector is a significant contributor to Canada’s economy, supporting good jobs for many coastal and First Nations communities. By working together, we can support strong coastal economies, healthy marine ecosystems, community well-being and resilience to climate change.
Minister’s statement on first tobacco litigation payment
This marks an important milestone for British Columbians, as the province begins to receive the $936-million initial payment from the historic $32.5-billion settlement in the lawsuit against tobacco companies. No amount of money will ever bring back the people we’ve lost to tobacco-related illnesses, but it is a welcome step in our mission to see justice delivered to British Columbians. Our top priority has always been and will always be keeping British Columbians safe, no matter how large an adversary or how long and difficult a journey we face.
This weekend I look forward to attending some events including the Grand Opening of the Fire Training Centre in Trail and the Opening Exhibit gathering at Elk Root Conservation in Vallican. (posters attached)
