KBRFR responds to overnight fire as 2026 call volume surges dramatically
KBRFR responded to a fire alarm early Tuesday morning at the Community Inclusion Centre located at 1458 Bay Ave., according to Fire Chief Dan Derby.
“At 12:56 a.m. on Jan. 27, KBRFR Station 374 (Trail) and Station 372 (Warfield) responded with 9 members to a fire alarm activation at 1458 Bay Ave.,” Derby said in a press release. “When the first engine arrived, crews confirmed a working fire in the rear of the business and i mmediately initiated fire suppression and search operations. The incident was brought under control by 01:36 a.m., and crews remained on scene to ensure the safety of the building and surrounding businesses.”
He said this incident is considered suspicious and we are currently investigating with the RCMP. We urge anyone who may have witnessed suspicious individuals or activities in the downtown area, or businesses that may have relevant video footage, to please contact the Trail RCMP.
Derby said this overnight fire response comes amid an unprecedented start to 2026 for KBRFR.
“Between Jan. 1 and Jan. 27, we have responded to 199 calls for service, compared to 103 calls during the same period last year—a nearly 93 per cent increase. Most notably, this morning’s fire was the third fire in the last 72 hours, tragically one of these incidents resulted in a fatality.
“These numbers reflect the growing pressures facing our community and the critical role all our first responders provide every day,” he added. “Despite the increased call volume, our members will continue to adapt and respond quickly and professionally, around the clock.”
