Referendum on $25-million Complex expansion set for Nov. 6

Residents will be able to vote in a referendum Nov. 6 regarding a proposed $25-million expansion of the Castlegar and District Recreation Complex.
Castlegar Mayor Lawrence Chernoff said the RDCK (Regional District of Central Kootenay) board of directors has to approve the referendum date at its regular meeting tomorrow night, but he thinks that’s merely a formality and the vote will go ahead as planned. He said the referendum will cost around $20,000 – but that’s worth providing residents of Castlegar and RDCK Areas I and J with a chance to weigh in on such a big decision. “It’s important,” he said. “$25 million is a lot of money, but it’s a project for the future and it covers everybody, from tots to seniors. “It allows the community to grow.” He also said these sorts of facilities are often determining factors in whether new residents move to the city, so the investment has the potential to offer hard returns, beyond their merit for local recreation and health.
