Saturday night saw police busy with smash-and-grabs, B&Es and thefts, according to Trail RCMP NCO/ic Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.

On Saturday, May 27, at 4:04 a.m. a suspect broke into a business and stole two parcels in the 1200 block of Bay Avenue, in Trail, BC. The content of the parcels is currently unknown. On Sunday, May 28, 2023, at 3:06 a.m., a second suspect broke into the business and stole a digital media receiver worth approximately $100.

Wicentowich said a Trail RCMP officer was notified about the incidents. The business had been left unsecured overnight.

The investigation is ongoing.

Also on Saturday, May 27, this time at 4:18 a.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer responded to a commercial alarm at a liquor store in the 1600 block of Second Avenue in Trail. Wicentowich said a suspect smashed the glass to the front door and entered the business, and that the suspect stole several bottle of liquor before fleeing the scene.

“An officer attended the scene and conducted an investigation,” Wicentowich said. “He located a bag containing several bottles of liquor hidden a short distance from the scene of the crime. The value of the liquor was approximately $900. The officer suspected the bag was too heavy for the thief to make a timely escape and may have represented a significant part of the items stolen.”

He said the suspect was wearing a beige coat, blue hat, with his face covered, and blue latex gloves. A witness was interviewed about the incident by the officer. The investigation is ongoing.

The suspect plans went bottoms up when the suspect couldn’t handle the weight of his stolen load, Wicentowich said.

Then on Sunday, May 28, at 11:38 a.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer received a report that $500 in cash had been stolen from a business in the 1300 block of Bay Avenue, in downtown Trail. The business had been left unsecured overnight.

Trail RCMP asks business owners to make sure their buildings are secure, surveillance is working, and to respond to alarm triggers if they occur. These crimes can be challenging to prevent and solve if the police only learn about them after the fact,  Wicentowich said.
