A local 51-year-old tow truck driver has died after being struck by a vehicle while attempting to help another motorist, according to RCMP Sgt. Chad Badry, of West Kootenay Traffic Services.

“On Nov. 17, just after 5:30 p.m. Castlegar RCMP were called to a collision between a vehicle and a deer on Hwy 22, from Castlegar from Trail,” Badry said in a press release today.

“When investigators arrived to assist with the initial investigation, it was determined … a tow operator who stopped to assist had been struck by a second southbound vehicle. The pedestrian, a 51-year-old from Castlegar had already been transported by Emergency Health Services to a local area hospital. His injuries were life threatening injuries and he was later pronounced deceased.”

Badry said the driver of the southbound vehicle remained at the scene.

“The highway was closed while collision analysts and Reconstructionists from Traffic Services completed their investigation (until roughly 12:45 a.m.),” he said. “RCMP Traffic Services in conjunction with WorkSafe BC and the BC Coroner’s Service will continue the investigation.

“Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call West Kootenay Traffic Services at 250-354-5180.”

While the man’s name has been released by other media outlets and on social media, The Source declines to do so until such time as officials release his name, as is this publication’s policy.
